Rauner's abortion decision betrays his liberal leanings, group says

Gov. Bruce Rauner has proven himself a liberal in GOP's clothing, Pat Hughes, co-founder of the Illinois Opportunity Project, suggested in a recent statement.

“No conservative reform governor has ever done so much for the liberal agenda," Hughes said, according to a press release. "“Last April, Gov. Rauner publicly promised that he would veto HB40 should it reach his desk …. Without apology or adequate explanation, he broke that promise.”

Rauner recently signed HB40 into law, providing Medicaid and state insurance funding for abortions for any reason until the last day of pregnancy. Previous Illinois law offered coverage only in cases of rape, incest, and health and life of the mother.

“A majority of Illinoisans – pro-life and pro-choice – object to this extreme measure,” Hughes said in his statement.

Hughes also argued that it is doubly troubling to adopt such a law in a state as deep in debt as Illinois is.

"Today, Illinois’ backlog of unpaid bills is higher, as is our unemployment rate and unfunded pension liability," he said, according to the release. "A budget impasse that put social service providers into crisis was ended by a massive tax hike with no structural reforms. Does that sound like a government under the leadership of a conservative reformer? No. It sounds more like the record of a politically connected Illinois Democrat.”
