Alternative forms of transportation can get state backing thanks to an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) program now accepting applications.

Online applications for the 2018 Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, or ITEP, will be taken until Dec. 1.

ITEP is federally funded and structured as a competitive grant program. Grants are awarded to recipients promoting alternative modes of transportation in urban and suburban areas across the state. These might include creation and maintenance of bike trails and streetscapes.

The only requirement is that local funds must be available to match the grant that is awarded. Each program may receive up to $2 million of the $40 million allotted.

Local entities with taxing authority are also given the ability to participate in the program, as are other eligible project sponsors.

All ITEP funds extend for four years upon award notification and must meet the full obligation in that same period.
