The latest STEAM Newsletter Vol. 41 is brimming with exciting summer fun and learning opportunities for students and educators alike. As we approach the end of the school year, the newsletter highlights various programs and events aimed at enhancing knowledge, cultivating interests in STEAM domains, and acquiring new skills.

Summer camps and professional development opportunities are on the horizon, with public universities in Illinois offering a diverse array of programs. From kindergarten through 12th grade, Chicago State University, Eastern Illinois University, Governors State University, Illinois State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University, the University of Illinois campuses, Western Illinois University, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, and more are hosting enriching experiences for students of different age groups.

One of the highlighted events is the STEM Career Exploration and Symposium at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on July 26, 2024. High school and community college students, as well as educators, are invited to explore careers in STEM and delve into the role of undergraduate research in preparing for these fields. The symposium will feature presentations by undergraduate researchers, career panel discussions, and networking opportunities.

In the realm of scientific research, Dr. Alison Robertson from the University of South Alabama and Dauphin Island Sea Lab sheds light on ciguatera poisoning, the most common non-bacterial seafood-borne illness globally. She emphasizes the importance of tracking ciguatoxins to prevent outbreaks and provide answers to affected individuals.

Additionally, a recent study on matador bugs conducted by Ummat Somjee at the Smithsonian Institution and The University of Texas at Austin unveils the defense strategy behind the bugs' vibrant flags, challenging traditional beliefs about the purpose of these colorful adornments.

The newsletter also features upcoming networking meetings, webinars, advocacy days, and conferences focusing on artificial intelligence literacy, social media impact on student mental health, STEM education, and social justice in education.

As the summer approaches, educators are encouraged to explore these enriching opportunities and resources to inspire and enhance their STEAM knowledge and skills.
