Antioch Community High School held its monthly You Make a Difference Breakfast on May 7, bringing together teachers, students, and their families to recognize students who were nominated for awards. The event took place in the school cafeteria and featured a large turnout of the school community.
The breakfast is part of an ongoing effort to celebrate student achievements and foster a sense of community within the school. A long list of students were recognized at the event for making positive contributions to their school environment.
Community High School District 117, which includes Antioch Community High School and Lakes Community High School, represents Lake County and serves grades nine through twelve. The district enrolled 2,635 students in the 2019-2020 school year and is located in Lake Villa and Lake County, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.
The district’s demographic breakdown is reported as 78 percent White, 3.1 percent Black, 12.1 percent Hispanic, and 3.2 percent Asian. There are no teachers with more than ten absences in a school year among its staff of 178 teachers—who earn an average salary of $63,920 before pension contributions—and about 57.6 percent are women while 42.4 percent are men,according to the Illinois State Board of Education.
In terms of spending and attendance statistics for recent years: Community High School District 117 spent $29,553 per student in fiscal year 2020 with total expenditures reaching $77,872,708; during that same period there were reportedly121 chronically truant students enrolled—a rate below the statewide average—with chronic truancy defined as missing five percent or more days without valid excuse,according to the Illinois State Board of Education.
Events like these breakfasts aim not only to honor individual achievement but also strengthen relationships between staff members and families across all represented schools.
