Ascension Illinois announced on April 17 that it is donating $10,000 to the HOPE Scholarship fund at Harper College through the Alexian Brothers Health System Nursing Scholarship. This marks the fifteenth year that Ascension Illinois has contributed to this scholarship initiative.

The scholarship is intended for students enrolled in Harper College’s nursing program who show bilingual fluency, strong academic performance, and a commitment to the nursing profession. The funds help cover tuition, fees, and books for recipients.

Roxann Barber, President of Ascension Saint Alexius, said: “It is important to reward nursing students who have a caring spirit and drive which allow them to go the extra mile and to improve the health and well-being of all the patients they encounter. A scholarship like this one does just that: rewards those who are looking to improve themselves in order to improve their community.”

According to Ascension Illinois, access to education remains vital for diverse communities across Illinois. The organization says its ongoing support aims both to provide opportunities for local students and increase the number of nurses entering the field.

The health system stated that providing this scholarship allows it “to serve alongside Harper College in improving the professional growth of a student who is being called to serve their community.” The statement added that as a Catholic Ministry, service can be represented through strengthening and educating future generations of nursing professionals.
