Mayor John Laesch honored Marmion Academy’s Boys Swimming and Wrestling Teams at the City Council meeting on Apr. 15, recognizing their recent victories in Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state championships.

The recognition highlights the achievements of local student athletes and brings attention to their hard work and success at the state level.

Marmion Academy’s Boys Swimming Team achieved multiple titles, with Brayden Capen winning both the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle events. Capen, along with teammates Dan Ginaitis, Patrick O’Connor, and Braden Nagel, also won the 200-yard medley relay championship with a time of 1:29.26.

In wrestling, Marmion’s Cadets secured their second consecutive state title after posting a final score of 36-22 during championship weekend in Bloomington. Individual wrestling champions included Nicholas Garcia (132 pounds), Demetri Carrera (138 pounds), and Zach Stewart (150 pounds).

“Both Marmion’s swimming and wrestling teams put up excellent performances,” Mayor John Laesch said. “Each athlete’s exceptional talent and hard work have truly made Aurora proud.”

Athletes were presented with personalized Mayor’s Awards of Excellence as well as commemorative street signs designed by the City’s Street Maintenance Division to celebrate their accomplishments.
