Block Club Chicago’s inaugural photojournalism intern shared reflections on six months with the publication, according to a May 4 announcement. The intern described a journey that included early mornings, late-night editing sessions, and visits to neighborhoods across Chicago.
The experience is highlighted as an opportunity for growth and immersion in local communities. The intern said the role allowed them to capture the diverse stories and visual identities of different neighborhoods, from Humboldt Park’s murals to Chinatown’s terra cotta arches.
“Photojournalists are ‘professional noticers’ — as originally put by Vanity Fair photographer Christopher Anderson — and I’ve enjoyed being able to notice on such a wonderful stage,” the intern said. They credited Block Club reporters for teaching meaningful lessons about journalism through their varied approaches to community storytelling.
A selection of photographs taken during the internship showcases moments such as student protests at River Park, community meetings at Kelly High School, families visiting Lincoln Park Zoo, and everyday scenes in local businesses. These images reflect both major events and daily life throughout Chicago.
In reflecting on their time with Block Club Chicago, the intern expressed appreciation for contributing visually to stories that connect people across neighborhoods. “I’m so happy that my photos have been able to play a role in that,” they said.
