In Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, 63-year-old Faustino Alamo Dominguez and his 25-year-old son Luis Angel Alamo were shot and killed during a robbery at their jewelry store. The suspect fled with merchandise before opening fire, prompting local leaders to call for increased security for small businesses and demand swift action from city and state law enforcement.
According to the Chicago Police Department and local media, retail robberies in Chicago have increased by approximately 4% year-over-year through October 2025. Business-owner homicides, although rare, rose from two in the first ten months of 2022 to five in the same period of 2025, marking an increase in deadly outcomes for small business incidents.
FBI- and city-compiled data indicate that Chicago’s homicide rate declined from about 29 per 100,000 residents in 2020 to about 21 per 100,000 by 2024. However, the proportion of murders occurring during robberies remained roughly at 4% of all homicides throughout that period, suggesting that the overall drop did not significantly change the share tied to robbery-involved killings.
