Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois, Decatur Memorial Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital announced on May 4 that they will host an event to honor local cancer survivors in celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day.

The annual gathering is intended to support and encourage individuals who have experienced a cancer diagnosis, whether recently or in the past. Organizers say the event provides an opportunity for survivors and their loved ones to come together for reflection, connection and celebration.

Cancer survivors and one guest are invited to attend the event at Fairview Park Pavilion on Saturday, May 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. The free event includes a barbecue lunch and music from Pizzazz. No registration is required. According to organizers, this tradition has continued for 25 years.

“This has become a wonderful tradition for cancer survivors and their loved ones,” said Jill Andrews, a manager with medical imaging at Memorial Cancer Care in Decatur. “We love being a part of this gathering that focuses on reflection, connection and celebration.”

Valerie Jordan, manager of Oncology Services at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital said: “A cancer diagnosis can change everything in an instant, bringing fear and so many unknowns. On National Cancer Survivors Day, we come together to honor the courage of those who have walked this journey, to stand beside those still in the fight and to remind every patient and family that hope is real, support is always here and brighter days are ahead.”

Physicians, healthcare professionals and volunteers will be present throughout the event offering support for both survivors and caregivers.

“For those of us who care for cancer patients and their families, it’s incredibly rewarding to see them living fully and with joy,” said Shannon Nail, counselor with Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois. “We look forward to this celebration as a time to honor their journeys and the strength that connects us all.”
