House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer announced on May 13 that Representative Brandon Gill of Texas will chair the newly created Task Force on Defending Constitutional Rights and Exposing Institutional Abuses. The task force is set to focus on defending constitutional rights against institutions alleged to undermine key aspects of American government and society.

The creation of this task force is significant as it aims to address concerns about illegal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, misuse of immigration and social welfare programs, and efforts by foreign actors or undisclosed funding groups to suppress free speech in the United States.

Comer said, “Representative Brandon Gill is a star on the Oversight Committee and has exposed the insanity of the Radical Left who seeks to undermine fundamental American values protected under our Constitution. I am happy to announce Representative Gill as the new chairman of our Task Force to support the preservation of constitutional rights enjoyed by the American People. Under his leadership, we will continue to expose radical ideologies being pushed on Americans and fight to safeguard our freedom that we’ve enjoyed as a nation for 250 years.”

Gill said, “Americans deserve truth, transparency, and justice. They are sick of being defrauded by government institutions and programs that should have been putting them first, not robbing their tax dollars. It is my great honor to chair the Oversight Committee’s new Task Force on Defending Constitutional Rights and Exposing Institutional Abuses. It is a great privilege and responsibility to carry on this extension of the work Chairman Comer and the committee is doing to fight for integrity and freedom for all.”

To begin its oversight activities, Comer and Gill sent a letter requesting documents from Ohio Department of Medicaid Director Scott Partika regarding recent allegations of fraud in Ohio’s Home and Community-Based Services Medicaid waiver program. This follows reporting that providers may have improperly billed Medicaid or billed for services not provided with minimal consequences.

The task force will operate for six months under committee rules with plans for hearings during its tenure. In addition to Gill as chairman, Republican members include Representatives Jim Jordan (Ohio), Andy Biggs (Arizona), Michael Cloud (Texas), Byron Donalds (Florida), and Brian Jack (Georgia). The group will examine issues such as discrimination in employment or academic settings tied to DEI policies; abuse within immigration or social welfare systems; efforts at censorship involving political speech; among other matters determined by leadership.
