Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg issued a statement on May 11 in recognition of National Charter Schools Week. Walberg said the week is an opportunity to highlight the role charter schools play in providing educational options for students across the country.

The topic is significant as debates continue over school choice and educational policy. The chairman’s remarks come at a time when many families are seeking alternatives to traditional public schools, especially as concerns grow about student achievement and learning loss.

“This week, we celebrate the incredible opportunities charter schools provide for students across the nation. Too many students are stuck in bloated, failing schools that don’t meet their needs. Even worse, Democrats and the Biden-Harris administration pushed a wide range of policies with the singular purpose of eliminating charter schools—stripping students of valuable educational opportunities,” Walberg said. He continued: “As students cope with learning loss and test scores decline, it is imperative we do our part as lawmakers to help create more pathways for students to get a great education. As long-time champions of expanding charter school options, my Republican colleagues and I remain steadfast in our work to support charter schools, students, and teachers.”

Walberg outlined several points about charter schools: they empower parents by increasing involvement in their children’s education; foster innovation through autonomy; offer alternatives for students leaving underperforming traditional public schools; and respond directly to student outcomes since unsuccessful charter schools can be closed.

The House Education and Workforce Committee manages federal programs concerning education, labor, health, and workforce development according to its official website. The committee also influences policy on matters such as student loans and worker protections. It serves within the legislative sector with jurisdiction over education and labor matters.

Looking ahead, Walberg indicated that he and his Republican colleagues will continue efforts supporting charter school expansion.
