Chicago Fire FC announced on May 19 a new short film featuring South African players Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Puso Dithejane as part of programming focused on soccer and African culture in Chicago. The announcement comes ahead of Africa Day, which will be observed on May 25.
The initiative aims to highlight the impact of African heritage within the club and the broader community. The film, titled “On the Rise: From South Africa to Chicago Fire,” will premiere at an Africa Day Gala in partnership with Mayor Brandon Johnson and the City of Chicago, bringing together civic leaders and members of Black and African communities.
Following its premiere, the film will be available on YouTube @chicagofire and featured in an upcoming episode of “Inside the Fire” on Marquee Sports Network. Produced by Black Arrow FC, a creative studio focused on football and Black culture, the feature documents Mbokazi’s and Dithejane’s journeys to joining Chicago Fire FC as well as their cultural influence within Chicago.
Dan Moriarty, Chief Marketing Officer of Chicago Fire FC, said: “This is a powerful moment, both for our team’s South African players and for the communities that shape our Club. This short film reflects our commitment to global culture, honors our players’ stories, and reinforces soccer as a platform to bring Chicagoans together.”
Mayor Brandon Johnson said: “Chicago’s rich culture is a result of the many backgrounds and heritages that make up what I call the ‘Soul of Chicago.’ The Fire continues to demonstrate how sports can strengthen community, by authentically celebrating African culture for players and fans. I’m proud to support a project that spotlights this pride in our very own city.”
Aaron Dolores, Founder of Black Arrow FC added: “Mbokazi and Dithejane’s stories are about more than just football — they reflect movement, identity, and how the game connects people across borders. Chicago is part of that story, and this project was about capturing that connection in a real way.”
Mbokazi is expected to be selected for South Africa’s national team this summer when international competition begins June 11. Fans can watch South Africa face Mexico at an official viewing event hosted by Chicago Fire Soccer Celebration at Recess in West Loop.
Chicago Fire FC competes professionally in Major League Soccer conferences with matches held at Soldier Field stadium; it has earned victories including MLS Cup wins while fostering soccer growth throughout Midwest youth programs according to the official website.
