Chicago Fire FC recorded its third consecutive victory after defeating Toronto FC 2-1 at Soldier Field on May 23. Defender Andrew Gutman scored the game-winning goal in the second half, marking his first of the season for Chicago.

The match was important as it sent Chicago into the World Cup break on a three-game winning streak, strengthening their position in Major League Soccer. The team continues to compete in MLS conferences with a professional roster and has a history of earning victories in the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cups, according to the official website.

The opening goal came from Robin Lod, who finished off an assist from Hugo Cuypers and Maren Haile-Selassie in the first half. Toronto equalized through Josh Sargent before halftime following an assist sequence involving Alonso Coello and Daniel Sallói. The second half remained tense until Philip Zinckernagel’s cross found Gutman, whose header put Chicago ahead for good.

Lod made his 150th regular season start in Major League Soccer during this match and scored his third goal since joining Chicago. Zinckernagel provided his fifth game-winning assist for Chicago while also recording a goal contribution for three consecutive matches this year. Cuypers’ streak of scoring in ten straight regular season games ended but he contributed with an assist on Lod’s opener, bringing him to a team-leading fifteen goal contributions for 2026.

Chicago Fire FC utilizes Soldier Field as its home venue and supports soccer growth across the Midwest through youth development and community initiatives, according to the official website. The club also incorporates symbols inspired by the Great Chicago Fire into its crest and colors.

Following this win, Chicago will observe a break during the FIFA World Cup before returning to host Vancouver Whitecaps FC on July 16. The upcoming match will be broadcast globally on Apple TV and locally via radio outlets.
