The Chicago Department of Public Health closed Dearborn Wholesale Grocers in Beverly View on April 17, citing what officials described as a “serious asbestos risk.”
Health officials said the emergency closure came after inspectors found conditions at the store, located at 1841 W. 79th St., that posed an imminent and substantial threat to public health, safety, and the environment. The department issued cease and desist and abatement orders to the owner.
The grocery store must remain closed until its owner completes a city-approved plan for reopening, according to authorities. Dr. Olusimbo Ige, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, said in a statement: “Protecting residents from dangerous environmental and public health hazards is one of CDPH’s most important responsibilities. When conditions create a serious risk of exposure, we will act immediately to protect the public and ensure that no facility is allowed to reopen until the law has been fully followed and the hazard has been properly addressed.”
Inspectors reported finding asbestos-related hazards inside Dearborn Wholesale Grocers during abatement activity on flooring tile while customers and workers were present. An open dumpster containing material with asbestos was also observed outside.
In response to these findings, health officials are advising anyone who purchased goods from Dearborn Wholesale Grocers between April 5-15 to discard those items—including any bags or boxes used—by sealing them before disposal. The department also recommends washing clothes worn at the store and cleaning surfaces that may have accumulated dust from it.
Exposure to asbestos fibers can cause severe illnesses such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis according to information provided by the Chicago Department of Public Health.
