Choose Chicago announced on April 30 that it is inviting both residents and visitors to celebrate the centennial of Route 66 in the city, marking the historic starting point of the famous highway. The organization said it is leading a yearlong campaign to position Chicago as a key gateway for global tourism connected to this milestone.
The centennial celebration is expected to draw international attention and boost local visitation. Choose Chicago aims to turn this historical event into an economic opportunity by promoting cultural programming, partnerships, and experiences tied to Route 66.
“Chicago is proud to be the starting point of Route 66, and the centennial is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate the road’s legacy and attract international visitors eager to experience this iconic piece of Americana,” said Kristen Reynolds, President and CEO of Choose Chicago. “We’ve spent years preparing for this moment—building experiences, strengthening partnerships, and creating new ways for visitors and residents to engage with Route 66. We look forward to celebrating throughout the year and encouraging exploration of the ‘Mother Road’ right here where it begins.”
Route 66 was established one hundred years ago as a link between the Great Lakes region and the Pacific Coast. Today, about forty million people travel some part of its route annually, with many coming from overseas markets. Choose Chicago has worked with partners such as Illinois’ Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity as well as local organizations on projects like murals in Tri-Taylor neighborhood, new signage downtown along Route 66, digital itineraries online for travelers planning their visits, media campaigns abroad positioning Chicago as “the gateway,” special-edition Ventra cards with CTA highlighting destinations along Route 66, collaborations with hotels offering themed packages for guests interested in exploring this history-rich route from its beginning.
Cultural activities are anchored by partnership with institutions like Art Institute of Chicago—the official starting point—featuring new works by Native American artists related events such as artist talks or updated museum tours focused on Route 66’s story.
Mike McMains, owner-operator at Tours With Mike added: “I am thrilled to partner with Choose Chicago for the third year in a row bringing the Route 66 Neighborhoods by Trolley tour to life for visitors and media. Route 66 is an American icon, and the Chicago neighborhoods surrounding it have truly amazing stories, landmarks, and attractions that I love featuring on this unique tour experience.”
