The Town of Cicero held its annual Memorial Day ceremony at noon on June 3, bringing together local officials, veterans, first responders, residents, and military families in a solemn observance to honor America’s fallen heroes.

Tony Sweatman, director of the Town of Cicero President’s Office of Military Families, welcomed attendees and thanked them for participating in the remembrance. The event began with the presentation of colors by the Cicero Police Department Color Guard, followed by an invocation from Town Chaplain Reverend Ismael Vargas and a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Town President Larry Dominick led attendees in singing “God Bless America.”

Former Town Assessor John Kociolko served as keynote speaker. He recognized the Cicero Police Department Color Guard and reflected on his experiences with ceremonial honor guards during his time with the Cicero Police Auxiliary. Kociolko said that police officers, firefighters, and paramedics also embody the spirit of service and sacrifice honored on Memorial Day. He thanked Sweatman for organizing the event and acknowledged contributions from Reverend Vargas and President Dominick. Kociolko also recognized several local officials in attendance.

During his remarks, Kociolko discussed what he described as three significant wars in American history—the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and World War II—highlighting sacrifices made by generations of Americans defending freedom. He recounted how Memorial Day originated after the Civil War when women decorated graves of fallen soldiers from both sides—a tradition that became a national observance.

Kociolko reflected on America’s upcoming 250th anniversary and praised General George Washington’s leadership during the Revolutionary War. He reminded attendees that approximately 750,000 Americans died during the Civil War and over 400,000 lost their lives in World War II while more than 16 million served. Throughout his address, he said it was important to remember more than one million Americans who have died in military service throughout history: “Our veterans and those who gave their lives in service to our country make it possible for us to gather here today and enjoy the freedoms we cherish,” Kociolko said.

The ceremony concluded with residents reflecting on courage, sacrifice, and dedication shown by those who defended United States freedoms throughout its history as part of Cicero’s longstanding tradition honoring those who gave their lives for their nation. The Town supports cultural well-being through programs such as senior services; operates facilities including Community Park; provides municipal services like public safety; draws its name from Marcus Tullius Cicero; extends services throughout Cook County neighborhoods; partners with local businesses for economic development—all according to the official website.
