The Cicero Health Department hosted a Women’s Wellness Event that brought together health professionals, local organizations, and residents for a day focused on prevention, education, and support on May 30. The event featured free health screenings, wellness information, music, entertainment, raffles, giveaways, and activities for all ages. Attendees also received complimentary haircuts, manicures, and B12 shots while learning about services designed to help women and families live healthier lives.

Vanessa Parrish, Director of Operations for the Cicero Health Department, welcomed attendees and said, “Women are often the caregivers and supporters of families and communities, but too often they put their own health and well-being last. Events like this are about changing that.” Parrish explained that the Women’s Wellness Event was created to make healthcare more accessible by bringing screenings, educational resources, wellness services, and community partners together in one place.

Marissa Buscemi, Director of Clinical Services for the Cicero Health Department, said, “Women should pay close attention to their heart health, blood pressure, diabetes, mental health, overall wellness—and especially breast cancer screenings. Early detection can truly save lives.” Buscemi said community events like this help residents feel more comfortable accessing healthcare services while promoting prevention throughout the community.

Dr. Katherine Skurski addressed attendees as Medical Director for the department: “Many women spend so much time caring for others that they put their own health last. Events like this help bring preventative care and health education directly into the community in a welcoming and approachable way.” Dr. Skurski also shared that mental health services have recently expanded with a new Spanish-speaking counselor added to better serve residents.

Several organizations participated in the event—including Family Services and The Children’s Center of Cicero-Berwyn—providing information about free services such as early childhood education programs, family support resources, and community assistance programs available to residents. Town officials thanked everyone who attended and encouraged continued participation in year-round programs offered throughout Cicero.

The Town of Cicero supports cultural well-being through senior services, bilingual assistance, operates facilities including Community Park, Community Center, Senior Center, provides municipal services such as public safety, recreational facilities, infrastructure maintenance, extends these across Cook County neighborhoods, draws its name from Marcus Tullius Cicero, and partners with businesses for economic development, according to the official website.
