Cindy Thompson retires after 11 years as hall monitor at Grayslake Central High School

Cindy Thompson is retiring from her position as hall monitor at Grayslake Central High School after 11 years, according to a May 11 announcement. Thompson is recognized for her positive influence and the connections she built with students and staff during her time in District 127.

Thompson said the relationships she developed were the most meaningful part of her career. “All the wonderful connections with staff and students,” she shared.

She became known for creating a welcoming atmosphere through humor and kindness. “I believe I have a knack for making people smile,” Thompson said. “I like to have a pleasant impact on people, being happy and funny.” These daily interactions contributed to a supportive environment at the school.

Reflecting on her experience, Thompson offered advice to others: “Enjoy your time, and don’t take things too personally,” she said. Looking ahead, she expressed excitement about retirement plans: “I’m not planning on getting up early unless it’s to go on vacation,” she said. “We just bought some jet skis, and I’m looking forward to having some fun on them, traveling, and spending more time with my kids and grandkids.”

Grayslake Community High School District 127 serves Lake County through Grayslake Central High School and Grayslake North High School according to the Illinois State Board of Education. The district enrolled 2,762 students in grades nine through twelve during the 2019-2020 school year in Grayslake and Lake County; it spent $31,874 per student that year for a total expenditure of $88 million according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district’s teaching staff consists of 195 teachers earning an average salary of $79,647 before pension contributions; nearly sixty percent are women according to the Illinois State Board of Education. The student body is composed of approximately fifty-nine percent White students, twenty-five percent Hispanic students, seven percent Asian students, and four percent Black students according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

During her tenure at Grayslake Central High School, Thompson’s efforts helped foster an environment where small acts made significant differences.
