The City of Petersburg released information on May 4 regarding the rules for displaying political campaign signs in the area.
The announcement is important for candidates, property owners, and residents as election season approaches. Understanding these regulations helps ensure compliance and maintains orderly public spaces.
According to the guidelines, political yard signs are allowed in all zoning districts. In residential areas, the total area of signs must not exceed six square feet. For commercial and industrial zones, signs can be up to thirty-two square feet in total area. All signs must be placed on private property and cannot block visibility at street intersections.
Responsibility for maintaining and removing campaign signs falls on several parties: “the candidate, spokesman or campaign committee,” as well as “the owner of the premises on which the sign is located,” “the person erecting the sign,” or “the person causing erection of the sign.” The city also requires that all campaign signs be removed within ten days after an election.
These rules are regulated under Article 21, Section 5.12. Observers say that following these requirements will help keep neighborhoods safe and uncluttered during elections.
