ComEd is encouraging Village of Park Forest residents to enroll in its Low-Income Discount Program, which began on Jan. 1 and aims to help qualifying households lower their electricity bills.
The program is part of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act and seeks to address rising utility costs for working families. It allows households earning up to 300% of the federal poverty level to qualify, with larger discounts given to those with lower incomes. Most participants will pay no more than 3% of their income for electricity, or up to 6% if they use electric heat.
“Programs like this help people stay safe and comfortable, even when energy costs change,” officials said. “No one should have to pick between paying their bills and meeting other basic needs.”
Enrollment is automatic for customers already receiving assistance through LIHEAP or PIPP programs. Others can apply online or through a local community action agency if they meet the income requirements. The discount appears as a line item on monthly ComEd bills and typically lasts from twelve to twenty-four months, after which recertification is required.
Hundreds of thousands have joined since the start of the year, indicating significant need among area residents.
