A community bike ride and safety workshop will take place in Brighton Park on April 15, offering residents a chance to explore new protected bike lanes on South Archer Avenue. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting at Palace Hall, 4604 S. Archer Ave., according to organizers.

The initiative aims to promote bicycle safety and familiarize neighbors with recent infrastructure upgrades in the area. Groups of six to eight participants will cycle along the Archer Avenue protected bike lane between Drake and Sacramento avenues.

City officials and local organizations will provide demonstrations on bicycle safety, basic mechanical checks, and how to fix a flat tire. The event is free and open to families; attendees are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets. Additionally, more than a dozen Divvy bikes will be available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis.

The event is organized by Alderman Julia Ramirez’s office (12th Ward), the city’s Department of Transportation, Working Bikes, the Brighton Park Neighborhood Council, and the Active Transportation Alliance. For further details, residents can contact the 12th Ward Office by phone or email as listed in event materials.

Weekly group rides hosted by the Southwest Collective are also available every Saturday in May. These rides begin at McKinley Park at South Archer Avenue and West 37th Street with meetups at 9:30 a.m., followed by departure at 10 a.m.

Protected bike lanes have become a point of debate locally after last year’s announcement that upgrades would include left-turn lanes, pedestrian islands, curb extensions, and updated bus shelters along Archer and Kedzie avenues—areas noted for high rates of traffic injuries involving pedestrians or cyclists between June 2024 and June 2025 as previously reported by Block Club Chicago. Some community members have protested these changes over concerns about increased traffic congestion affecting local businesses.

Recent events underscore ongoing safety concerns: just last week an eighteen-year-old cyclist was fatally struck in Chicago Lawn.
