Illinois forward David Mirkovic announced on Apr. 15 via Twitch and Instagram that he will return to the Fighting Illini men’s basketball team for the 2026-27 season.
Mirkovic’s decision is significant as he played a key role in Illinois’ recent success, helping the team secure its first Final Four appearance since 2005. He ranked third on the team in scoring and second in both rebounding and assists last season, averaging 13.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.
Mirkovic set a new freshman record at Illinois with 297 total rebounds, surpassing Kofi Cockburn’s previous mark of 272 from the 2019-20 season. He also ranks among the program’s top five all-time freshmen in several categories: wins (28, tied for first), field goals (176, second), double-doubles (nine, second), starts (36, second), total points (493, fourth), and minutes played (1,090, tied for fourth).
He was named to the NCAA All-Region Team as Illinois won the South Regional Championship this past season. Additional honors include being voted to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and receiving NABC All-Great Lakes District Second Team and All-Big Ten Honorable Mention recognition.
The University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team has a long history of success according to the official website, including NCAA Final Four appearances in 1949, 1951, 1952, 1989 and most recently in 2005. The team plays its home games in Champaign and has earned multiple Big Ten Conference titles over many decades according to university records. The program competes at the NCAA Division I level as part of the Big Ten Conference under its athletics nickname “Fighting Illini” according to university sources.
Mirkovic’s return is expected to have an impact on both team performance next year and fan expectations as Illinois looks ahead after a strong postseason run.
