U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin voted against the nomination of Kevin Warsh to serve as the next Chair of the Federal Reserve, according to a May 13 statement.
The decision comes at a time when inflation has reached its highest point in three years, and concerns about economic leadership are prominent. Durbin said his vote reflected doubts about Warsh’s commitment to prioritizing working families during challenging times.
“Americans are struggling more than ever to afford basic goods, and yesterday, data showed that Trump’s war of choice in Iran has caused inflation to reach 3.8%—the highest in three years. Working families deserve a central bank that will fight for them, not the President and his billionaire buddies. I am not convinced that Mr. Warsh has the willingness to do what is best for the American people. For that reason, I voted no on his nomination,” Durbin said.
He also recognized Jerome Powell’s service as outgoing Chair: “I also want to commend Jerome Powell for serving with competency and dignity, and for standing firm in the face of this President’s tirades. The Justice Department must finally put to bed the possibility of pursuing baseless, politicized charges against Chair Powell in the future.”
Durbin represents Illinois in the U.S. Senate and holds a leadership role as Senate Democratic Whip; he also participates in committees focused on judiciary matters, agriculture, nutrition and forestry; assists constituents with federal agency issues; supports health initiatives such as childhood asthma programs; facilitates immigration processes; aids with federal claims; promotes medical research; convenes Illinois’ bipartisan congressional delegation; and supports community efforts across these areas according to the official website.
