Eastern Illinois University announced on May 16 that its men’s track and field team won the 2026 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship, marking the program’s 18th overall title and its first since the 2021 season.

The victory is significant for Eastern Illinois as it highlights a strong performance across multiple events, with the women’s team also finishing in second place—its best outdoor championship result since 2017. Southeast Missouri claimed the women’s team title, while Tennessee Tech placed third.

Jame Gildon was named OVC Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to a total of 204 points. Southeast Missouri finished second with 186.50 points, followed by Little Rock in third place. The Panthers had a collective effort with 15 individual podium finishes during Saturday’s championship events and earned medals in both men’s and women’s 4×100 meter relays. Twenty individuals and both Panther relay teams contributed additional points through top-eight finishes.

Shawn Lacy led a pivotal sweep in the men’s javelin event with a throw of 213 feet, eleven inches—the fifth-best mark in school history—while teammates Teegan Simmons and Maliek Bush secured silver and bronze medals respectively. Alex Stout added another gold for Eastern Illinois by winning the men’s shot put at just over fifty-five feet; Jacob Maxwell took bronze in that event as well.

On the women’s side, freshman Analena Peterson won two gold medals: she set a school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.62 seconds and anchored EIU’s winning women’s relay team alongside Abby Venhaus, Kenyetietta Quinn, and Annebelle Coudron. Other notable performances included Ayden Cothern earning three podium spots for men’s sprints and Ashlyn Denney finishing second in the women’s 800 meters.

The university said that athletes will soon learn if they qualify for next week’s NCAA West Regional meet; selections are based on being among the top forty-eight individual performers or top twenty-four relay teams.
