Eastern Illinois secures series win over UT Martin with strong offensive showing

Eastern Illinois University clinched a series victory over UT Martin on April 25 after scoring double-digit runs for the twelfth time this season. The Panthers improved their record to 24-14 overall and 12-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while the Skyhawks dropped to 20-22 overall and 6-11 in conference games.

The game saw Eastern Illinois dominate offensively, scoring six runs in a single inning for the second consecutive game. UT Martin pitcher Gehrig Wright was charged with his fifth loss of the season, giving up four earned runs and nine hits across six innings.

Eastern Illinois opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning, highlighted by Peyton Wilson’s fourth home run of the year. Although UT Martin briefly took a lead in the third inning after TJ Dunsford hit a three-run homer, Eastern Illinois regained control soon after. The Panthers added two more runs in the fourth and broke open the game with a six-run seventh inning that extended their lead to 10-4.

Key contributors included James Love, Mike O’Conor, Zak Goodwin, Quade Peters, Tyler Castro, Chris Worcester, Ethan Rossi, and Wilson. The team drew nine walks during the game—three by Castro—and multiple players had multi-RBI performances: Wilson (two RBIs), Peters (two RBIs), and Castro (two RBIs). Anthony Solis secured his second win of the season for Eastern Illinois by striking out seven batters over five innings while allowing three earned runs.

The final score was Eastern Illinois 10 runs on 11 hits with one error; UT Martin had six runs on nine hits and one error. Notable individual performances included O’Conor going two-for-four with a double; Wilson going two-for-four with two RBIs including a home run; Peters going two-for-three with two RBIs; and Castro collecting two RBIs from three walks.

Looking ahead, Eastern Illinois will attempt to sweep UT Martin in their next matchup scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 PM Central Time.
