The City of Elgin announced on May 19 that all nonemergency city offices will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. Regular business hours are set to resume on Tuesday, May 26.

The closure affects various city services, including garbage and recycling collection. There will be no collection on Monday, May 25. For the rest of the week, collections originally scheduled for Monday through Friday will be delayed by one day each, with Friday’s collections taking place on Saturday.

Residents are invited to attend Memorial Day ceremonies hosted by the Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association on Monday, May 25. The first ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. A second program will follow at 11 a.m. at Bluff City Cemetery.

This year’s observance will honor America’s first veterans as part of the nation’s commemoration of the Revolutionary War’s 250th anniversary. Organizers plan to recognize “the courage and sacrifice of the citizens who fought for the nation’s freedom 250 years ago.” Community members are encouraged to attend these events “and join in remembering and honoring those who served the country.”

The city has reminded residents about both office closures and changes in waste collection schedules as part of its annual holiday routine.
