Ladell D. Walker Sr., 47, of Elgin, Illinois, was found guilty on May 7 following a four-day jury trial for Drug-Induced Homicide, a Class X felony, according to McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese.
The case centers on the September 12, 2023 death of a 43-year-old man at a local motel. Evidence presented during the trial showed that an employee discovered the victim deceased after entering his room. Law enforcement conducted an investigation and recovered narcotics-related items and electronic evidence from the scene. A forensic examination of the victim’s phone revealed communications linking Walker to supplying drugs shortly before the fatal overdose. Further testing confirmed fentanyl in the victim’s system and corroborated Walker’s involvement.
“This verdict reflects the tireless work of law enforcement and prosecutors committed to holding drug dealers accountable when their actions lead to death,” said State’s Attorney Randi Freese. “The distribution of deadly narcotics continues to devastate families and communities, and this office will continue to aggressively prosecute dealers who distribute deadly drugs to McHenry County residents, regardless of what county they may operate from. If you choose to profit from poison that takes a life in our community, we will pursue justice wherever the evidence leads.”
Walker is scheduled for sentencing on July 16, 2026.
Freese thanked the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office for its investigative efforts as well as Detective Michael Maloney of Crystal Lake Police Department for assistance at trial. The prosecution team included Assistant State’s Attorneys Elizabeth Vonau and Joseph Tarczon.
