Elmwood Elementary students gathered earlier this week for their monthly Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) celebration, according to an April 18 announcement. The event recognized students who have shown positive behavior and met school-wide expectations, with special recognition given to Students of the Month for demonstrating strong character and leadership.

These celebrations are part of ongoing efforts at Elmwood Elementary to promote a supportive school environment by acknowledging good conduct among students. Honoring those who consistently display positive traits aims to encourage all students to follow similar examples.

Elmwood is one of several schools represented in Zion Elementary School District 6, which also includes Beulah Park Elementary School, East Elementary School, Lakeview School, Shiloh Park Elementary School, West Elementary School, and Zion Central Middle School according to the Illinois Report Card. The district serves grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade in Zion and Lake County and enrolled 2,483 students during the 2019-2020 school year according to the Illinois Report Card.

Zion Elementary School District 6 employs a total of 164 teachers with an average salary of $58,629 before pension contributions; women make up about 83 percent of the teaching staff while men comprise nearly 17 percent. No teachers had more than ten absences in a single school year according to data from the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district’s student population is diverse: approximately five percent White, thirty-seven percent Black, fifty-one percent Hispanic, and less than one percent Asian as reported by ISBE. In terms of spending, Zion District spent $27,927 per student in 2020 for a total expenditure exceeding $69 million according to official records.

Chronic truancy remains below state averages within the district; there were 179 chronically truant students in the last recorded year—a rate of just over seven percent—compared with a statewide average nearing ten percent as reported by ISBE.
