Five Southern Illinois University baseball student-athletes were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced on May 18. The honorees are Andrew Evans, Julio Guerrero, Meade Johnson, Dylan Petrey, and Gabe Petrucelli.
This recognition highlights the balance these athletes have achieved between their academic and athletic responsibilities. Each of the five players has demonstrated strong performance both on the field and in their studies.
Evans leads Southern Illinois with a 2.40 earned run average over 14 starts this season and is first in the conference with 84 strikeouts and a 1.13 WHIP. He holds a grade point average of 3.5 as a University Studies major. Guerrero has contributed significantly on offense despite missing part of the season, posting a .306 batting average along with eight home runs and leading the team with 19 stolen bases while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA in Sport Administration.
Johnson made appearances both as a starter and reliever during regular season play, recording three saves after moving to the bullpen; he holds a GPA of 3.8 in Human Sciences. Petrey has posted an earned run average of 1.80 over his last nine games with opponents hitting .208 against him; this is his second appearance on the scholar-athlete list after being named to its second team last year—he maintains a GPA of 3.75 in Industrial Management and Applied Engineering. Petrucelli ranks second among Salukis hitters at .301 for batting average this season, including .405 over his last ten games; he carries a GPA of 3.84 in University Studies.
The Southern Illinois Salukis baseball program has recorded five College World Series appearances under legendary coach Richard ‘Itchy’ Jones, who led them to ten NCAA Tournament appearances according to the official website. The program promotes community engagement through its role within university athletics, features Itchy Jones Stadium equipped with artificial turf and advanced video technology, retired Jones’s uniform number in honor of his contributions, and currently includes approximately thirty-nine student-athletes.
