Fighting Illini sophomore Freddie Turnell was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Hoosier Collegiate in Bloomington, Indiana, according to an April 23 announcement by the Big Ten Conference.
Turnell’s recognition comes after he secured his first victory at Illinois and the second of his college career. He competed as an individual and finished with scores of 72-70-70, totaling a three-round score of 212 (one under par). Turnell was the only golfer among 88 competitors to record multiple rounds under par and posted a perfect head-to-head record against other Big Ten players in a field that included ten conference teams and additional individuals.
Turnell made ten birdies—second most in the tournament—and one eagle, tying for first in that category. He finished par or better on 44 out of 54 holes and closed out his solo win with a birdie on his final hole. This marks Turnell’s first career Big Ten Golfer of the Week honor and is the fifth such award for Illinois men’s golf during the current season.
