Fighting Illini freshman Gabriel Debru was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week by the conference office on Apr. 15 following his performances during Illinois’ road matches in Los Angeles.
This recognition marks the second time this season that Debru has received the award, highlighting his contributions to University of Illinois Fighting Illini Men’s Tennis, which competes in dual matches and tournaments as part of its season, according to the official website.
During matches against No. 24 UCLA and USC, Debru went undefeated with a 3-0 record. This included two singles victories over ranked opponents and a doubles win alongside teammate Tyler Bowers. As a result, Debru now holds a career-high ranking at No. 23 in ITA singles rankings.
The press release details that “the Frenchman started the weekend with a straight-set singles victory over UCLA’s No. 24 Emon van Loben Sels, 7-6(4), 7-6(3), on Court 2.” It continues: “He followed it up one day later with another ranked straight-set win, this time against USC’s No. 64-ranked Nathan Trouve, 6-2, 7-5.” In doubles play against UCLA, he and Bowers defeated Andy Nguyen and Aadarsh Tripathi by a score of 6-3.
This is not only an individual achievement for Debru but also reflects broader success within the team; it is noted as “the fifth Big Ten Freshman of the Week distinction for an Illini this season,” with both Adam Jilly and Sasha Colleu previously receiving similar honors.
University of Illinois Fighting Illini Men’s Tennis enhances athletic heritage at the university and aligns with University of Illinois athletics as well as participation in NCAA Division I under Big Ten Conference regulations according to its official website. The program supports student-athletes in balancing academic responsibilities alongside their athletic commitments while being recognized for involvement in competitive tennis events.
Looking ahead, No. 15 Illinois (20-6 overall; 9-3 Big Ten) will return home to Atkins Tennis Center for its final regular-season match against Northwestern on Senior Day.
