Senior javelin thrower Gavin Gonzalez of the Illinois Wesleyan University men’s track and field team was named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Field Athlete of the Week, according to an April 15 announcement by the organization. This marks his first career weekly award and is also the first such honor for a Titan during this outdoor season.
The recognition comes after Gonzalez’s performance at the Greenville Select Meet on April 11, where he broke a school record that had stood for more than three decades. In only his second collegiate appearance, Gonzalez threw 60.87 meters in javelin, surpassing John Munch’s previous record of 60.30 meters set in 1995. His mark currently ranks him fifteenth nationally among Division III athletes and puts him within reach of national championship selection.
The Illinois Wesleyan Titans Men’s Track and Field program is part of intercollegiate athletics based in Bloomington, Illinois, competing at the NCAA Division III level within the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin according to the official website. The team features student-athletes from freshman to senior years according to its official website.
The Titans host indoor events at Shirk Center Indoor Track, a facility dedicated to track and field according to their official website. Recently, they placed second in the CCIW Championships as reported by their official site.
Looking ahead, several members of the team will compete at California’s Bryan Clay Invitational from April 16-18 while others will participate in Rock Island at Augustana’s Meet of Champions on April 18.
