Gennings Dunker, a resident of Lena and the 45th District, was drafted to the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 96th pick in the NFL Draft, according to an announcement on April 27.

Dunker is recognized for his achievements both on and off the field. His athletic career began at Lena-Winslow High School, where he helped lead his team to a state championship. This early success demonstrated what supporters describe as toughness and discipline that would serve him well in later stages.

At the University of Iowa, Dunker became a key player for the Hawkeyes’ offensive line. He started 38 games over three seasons and earned All-Big Ten honors from coaches and media alike. He was also part of a unit that won the Joe Moore Award, which is given to college football’s top offensive line.

A statement released about Dunker’s draft said: “Gennings has already made his mark as a standout athlete and a leader our communities can rally behind.” The statement continued: “Gennings is a great example of the kind of work ethic and character we see every day in the 45th District. We are excited to watch him take the next step and represent Lena on the national stage.”

Chesney, a Republican, was elected to represent Illinois’ 45th Senate District in 2023 after succeeding Brian Stewart according to official records.

Supporters say they look forward to seeing Dunker continue his career at the professional level with hopes that he will bring further recognition to his hometown.
