Harmonic announced on April 19 that DIRECTV is updating its U.S. direct-to-home video platform using Harmonic’s VOS Media Software, aiming to lower operational costs and improve the quality of its linear channel delivery.

This development is significant as it highlights a move toward unified, cloud-native solutions in the media industry, which can help providers like DIRECTV streamline operations and deliver better service to customers.

The new system will run in DIRECTV’s private data center and handle various tasks including ingesting content, advanced playout features such as ad insertion and branding, premium encoding for broadcast-quality channels via satellite distribution, as well as statistical multiplexing. The solution also integrates with DIRECTV’s internal automation systems through Harmonic’s APIs for seamless control over scheduling and channel operations.

Gil Rudge, senior vice president at Harmonic’s video business unit said: “Harmonic is proud to support DIRECTV’s software-based approach in modernizing its playout-to-delivery operations.” Rudge added: “With Harmonic’s AI-driven encoding and advanced compression solution, DIRECTV is well positioned to deliver exceptional video experiences to viewers across their linear channels, optimizing quality while minimizing bandwidth usage and operational costs.”
