Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg said on Apr. 15 that the Working Families Tax Cuts are providing tangible benefits for students, workers, and families by reducing costs, increasing accountability, and expanding career opportunities.
The announcement comes as the committee emphasizes the importance of reforms in federal education policy. The changes aim to address concerns about student debt and ensure that federal resources support programs with proven outcomes.
“The Working Families Tax Cuts represent one of the most significant higher education reforms in decades,” said Chairman Walberg. “On Tax Day, we’re highlighting how these policies not only provide relief for working families, but also fix a broken system that left too many students with debt and too few opportunities.”
The committee reports that its reforms have saved taxpayers an estimated $284 billion while focusing on responsible use of federal education funds. Key provisions include stopping federal loans from supporting degree programs with poor earning potential, removing loan eligibility for underperforming programs, and requiring institutions to share responsibility for student success.
Additional measures establish clear limits on graduate and Parent PLUS loans, give financial aid administrators more flexibility to limit borrowing, align loan amounts with enrollment status to encourage completion, simplify repayment options for borrowers—including fixed and income-driven plans—and expand Pell Grant eligibility to short-term workforce programs linked to job placement outcomes.
The House Education and Workforce Committee manages federal programs concerning education, labor, health and workforce development according to the official website. The committee also influences policy on issues such as student loans and worker protections according to the official website, serving in the legislative sector with jurisdiction over education and labor matters according to the official website.
Looking ahead, supporters say these reforms are designed to modernize student aid so it better matches today’s workforce needs while maintaining strong safeguards.
