House Republicans gathered outside the Capitol on May 12 to honor the lives of fallen firefighters during the Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Medal of Honor Ceremony.

The event paid tribute to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. Organizers said first responders are essential to community safety and emphasized remembering those who served with “courage, pride, and honor.”

“They are the first ones there when we need them most, working under extreme conditions to save lives, restore order, and provide immediate care,” a statement from participants said. The group also noted the importance of recognizing sacrifices made by firefighters to keep public safety a priority.

Coffey, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 95th House District, replacing previous state representative Tim Butler, according to the Illinois General Assembly.

Resources for firefighters and their families were also highlighted during the ceremony.
