Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee Chairman Rick Allen announced on Apr. 16 that the committee held a hearing to review the policies and priorities of the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) under Assistant Secretary Daniel Aronowitz.
The hearing addressed how EBSA manages employer-provided benefit plans for millions of Americans. The discussion is important because these plans cover retirement and health benefits for about 156 million people and hold roughly $14 trillion in assets. Ensuring these benefits work effectively impacts many families across the country.
Allen said, “Today’s hearing will examine the policies and priorities of the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) under the leadership of Assistant Secretary Daniel Aronowitz. The Committee is focused on protecting workers, lowering costs, and restoring accountability in our benefits system. Simply put: retirement and health benefits must actually work for American families.” He also said that recent actions have been taken to reverse what he called harmful Biden-era policies so that retirement savings are invested with a focus on returns rather than political or social causes.
He continued by discussing healthcare costs: “Too often, heath care prices are hidden from both patients and employers, making true competition impossible as costs soar… Employers should have access to health plan data so they can design plans that meet employee needs while lowering health care costs.” Allen added that legislation will continue to be prioritized to increase transparency in healthcare billing practices.
Oversight was another topic raised during the hearing. Allen said investigations into employee benefit plans should be targeted rather than burdensome or costly: “While oversight of employee benefit plans is necessary, it must be targeted, efficient, and focused on real violations.” He criticized past investigations as being lengthy and paid for by taxpayers without clear results.
The House Education and Workforce Committee manages federal programs concerning education, labor, health and workforce development according to its official website. The committee also influences policy on issues such as student loans and worker protections according to its official website, serving in the legislative sector with jurisdiction over education and labor matters according to its official website.
Allen concluded his statement by addressing Aronowitz directly: “Mr. Aronowitz, you have been a leader in employee benefits plan management for decades. I look forward to hearing from you about the work EBSA has done to protect workers’ health and retirement plans…”
