The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced on May 13 the addition of two new nursing license types to its Comprehensive Online Regulatory Environment (CORE) platform, marking the completion of Phase 3.4 in the system’s implementation.

This update is significant as it brings nursing professionals—one of Illinois’s largest professional groups—into the modernized licensing system, aiming to support a strong health care workforce for state residents. The department said that integrating these professions into CORE is an important step toward streamlining credentialing for essential health workers.

“Providing a faster, more efficient pathway for nursing professionals to enter or renew their credentials directly supports our ongoing efforts to maintain a strong and reliable health care workforce capable of meeting the needs of residents,” said Mario Treto, Jr., Secretary at IDFPR. “Modernizing the licensing process reduces administrative barriers and helps more of these qualified professionals to enter the field.”

Individuals seeking licensure as Licensed Practical Nurse or Temporary Licensed Practical Nurse are now able to apply through CORE. According to IDFPR, there are currently 131 new applications for licensure being accepted on this platform.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation promotes trust in financial and professional services by protecting consumers and supporting career opportunities, according to its official mission page. The agency aims to safeguard Illinois residents, maintain financial stability, license qualified professionals, and boost state commerce; it also regulates entities such as banks and other professionals statewide while overseeing areas like cannabis regulation following recent laws according to its official websiteand history page.

The department was established through executive order in 2004 by consolidating prior entities into one agency responsible for licensing and regulating various professions including healthcare and real estate according to its history page.
