The Illinois Department of Transportation announced on April 16 that work continues on the multi-year reconstruction of East State Street (Route 38) from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River. The project includes widening the roadway, adding streetscape features, bike lanes, upgraded traffic signals, new street lighting, and improvements to water main and storm drainage infrastructure.
This construction is significant as it aims to improve transportation safety and infrastructure in the area. The changes are expected to benefit motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians by modernizing a key route through the community.
According to IDOT, installation of a new sanitary sewer main has been completed from Route 25 just past Garfield Street. Work will continue eastward next week. Pavement removal along the center of East State Street up to Simpson Street was carried out this week as part of preparations for temporary pavement at the East Side Drive intersection. This temporary pavement will be installed at Route 38 and East Side Drive during the week of April 20 to support future construction stages.
Currently, only one lane in each direction is open between the Fox River bridge and Simpson Street. Motorists are urged to use caution and follow flaggers’ instructions while traveling through this section. The pre-stage phase is expected to conclude by May if weather allows.
Utility relocation work is also underway. Archon (AT&T) crews are scheduled to return for fiber crossing adjustments near East Side Drive during the week of April 20 after attending an emergency job elsewhere; daily lane closures will occur between East Side Drive and Briar/Ridge Lane with completion anticipated in late April followed by restoration in early May. NPL (Nicor) has started concrete restoration repairs which should finish by late April, while Dynasty Utility Services (Comcast) plans cable-pulling operations next week that are not expected to affect traffic but should also wrap up by late April.
All activities remain subject to weather conditions or other unforeseen factors that could alter timelines.
The full reconstruction project is projected for completion in late 2027 with final punch list items extending into the following year. Residents can subscribe for updates about road construction via Notify Me on the City’s website.
