The Illinois Policy Institute announced that the state’s 2026 budget directs nearly $1.2 million to Centro de Trabajadores Unidos, a non-profit organization, including $750,000 from the Department of Human Services and $433,283 from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, with limited public details on how the funds will be used.

The allocation has drawn attention due to what some describe as vague descriptions in grant documentation. The Illinois Policy Institute said there is little public information on how the money will be used by Centro de Trabajadores Unidos. According to a report by the Illinois Policy Institute on X, “Illinois lawmakers allocated nearly $1.2 million to Centro de Trabajadores Unidos in the 2026 budget. The funding details are limited, with little public information on how the money will be used. The organization reportedly engages in worker advocacy, including programs on minimum wage, labor regulations, and support for immigrant communities.”

The Illinois Policy Institute also reported that grants included in the budget have vague descriptions such as $433,283 listed for “building aquation” without further explanation. The Civic Federation has noted that unclear grant purposes can reduce taxpayer oversight and called for greater transparency in budget planning.

Centro de Trabajadores Unidos describes itself as a member-led, grassroots worker center serving Chicago’s Southeast Side and southern suburbs. According to its website, it was founded in 2008 and provides programs to help low-wage workers understand their rights and take collective action against exploitation.

The Illinois Policy Institute serves as a nonpartisan research organization dedicated to advocating for Illinois taxpayers (according to its official website). It offers data-driven analysis and solutions on issues like state budgets, taxes, education and pensions; it seeks to promote free-market principles and limited government; it concentrates efforts within Illinois; it functions as an independent nonprofit think tank focused on policy analysis; it maintains its headquarters in Chicago (official website).

“The Illinois Policy Institute works to foster fiscal responsibility and government reform to build a more prosperous future for Illinois residents. The Illinois Policy Institute seeks to promote free-market principles and limited government to enhance economic opportunity and individual liberty in Illinois,” according to its official website.
