On Thursday, the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) approved a project to install new automatic warning devices and circuitry at the Maryland Road highway-rail grade crossing of the Illinois Central Railroad Company’s track near Radom in Washington County.
“The ICC is pleased to allocate Grade Crossing Protection Funds to bring important rail improvement projects to fruition. New signals and circuitry will improve safety for anyone using the Maryland Road crossing,” stated ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan.
The project is estimated to cost $564,186 for signal design and construction. The ICC staff recommended that 95 percent of these costs, up to $535,977, be covered by the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF). The remaining costs for signal design and installation, temporary STOP signs, and future maintenance will be paid by Illinois Central.
The completion of all work is expected within 18 months from the order date. More details can be found in Stipulated Agreement 2364, Docket No. T25-0044.

Established in 1955, the GCPF aims to enhance public highway-rail safety through various projects such as installing new warning systems and improving existing ones. It is funded by motor fuel tax money allocated for rail safety improvements with an annual appropriation of $42 million by the General Assembly.
The Illinois Commerce Commission functions as a quasi-judicial body with five Commissioners overseeing utility services and transportation regulatory programs in Illinois. It also inspects railroad tracks, facilities, and equipment through its Rail Safety Program.
