Illinois defeats No. 20 Nebraska 10-5 in series opener at Illinois Field

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball team defeated No. 20 Nebraska with a score of 10-5 on April 24 in the opening game of their weekend series.

The victory marks the third time this season that Illinois has beaten a ranked opponent, highlighting the team’s competitive presence in NCAA Division I and Big Ten Conference play, according to the official website.

Jack Zebig led the offense with three hits, including a home run and two runs batted in. Will Johannes contributed significantly with a grand slam during a six-run third inning that gave Illinois an early lead. Regan Hall started on the mound for Illinois, pitching seven innings and earning his sixth win of the season while recording six strikeouts. Sam Mommer finished the game by throwing two scoreless innings in relief.

Other notable performances included Michael Farina and Nick Groves each collecting two hits and scoring twice, while AJ Putty added two runs batted in. The team maintained its momentum throughout, answering Nebraska’s mid-game rally with three additional runs in the sixth inning to secure their advantage.

Illinois continues to provide student-athletes opportunities for competition, development, and academic achievement as part of its intercollegiate athletics program at the University of Illinois, according to its official website. The Fighting Illini regularly participate in both conference and non-conference games to build experience at this level.
