The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has announced a series of events and initiatives for July. The application period for Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grants begins on July 1, offering funding to local government agencies for public parks and open spaces. The deadline for applications is September 30.
On the same day, the Chester Municipal Band will perform an Independence Day concert at Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site in Randolph County. Additionally, the first lottery for site-specific dove hunting permits opens to Illinois residents, with a separate youth lottery running until July 26.
Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site will host an Independence Day celebration from July 1-3, featuring period demonstrations and readings of the Declaration of Independence. Meanwhile, Dickson Mounds Museum in Fulton County will hold “Tot Time: Buzz Buzz Bees!” on July 3, offering educational activities about bees.
Apple River Fort State Historic Site will celebrate Independence Day on July 4 with historical reenactments and activities. The Kaskaskia Bell State Memorial will also hold its annual Fourth of July celebration.
The second lottery for dove hunting permits opens on July 6, available to both residents and non-residents. On July 8, IDNR will co-host a free kids’ fishing day at Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in Perry County.
Giant City State Park offers a sun-up hike on July 11, while Starved Rock State Park hosts a sunrise prairie hike on July 13. The David Davis Mansion State Historic Site in Bloomington presents the Glorious Garden Festival from July 11-12.
Additional lotteries include deer firearm and muzzleloader permits opening on July 11 and fall turkey shotgun permits starting on July 18. History enthusiasts can join guided tours at William W. Powers State Recreation Area throughout late July.
From late July through early August, Sparta’s World Shooting and Recreation Complex hosts the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships. Springfield’s historic sites offer various summer programs under “History Comes Alive.”
Throughout the month, IDNR provides safety education courses statewide alongside ENTICE teacher education courses focusing on nature conservation topics.
