The Illinois Department of Revenue announced on Apr. 13 that Crawford County has been assigned a final property assessment equalization factor, or multiplier, of 1.0000 for the year 2025, according to David Harris, director of the department.

The equalization factor is used to ensure that property assessments are uniform across counties in Illinois. This process helps prevent tax inequities among taxpayers with similar properties, especially since many local taxing districts overlap county lines.

Under state law passed in 1975, most properties in Illinois are assessed at one-third of their market value. The department reported that assessments in Crawford County currently stand at 33.36% of market value based on sales from the past three years. The new multiplier applies to taxes payable in 2026 and matches last year’s figure for the county.

Harris said the final assessment equalization factor was issued after a public hearing on the tentative factor set earlier this year. The tentative and final factors were both set at 1.0000 following an annual review comparing recent sale prices to assessed values placed by local officials.

A change in the equalization factor does not automatically mean higher or lower total property tax bills for residents. Tax bills depend on how much money local taxing bodies request each year to provide services rather than changes in assessments alone.

The Illinois Department of Revenue works to foster an inclusive environment that values diversity and equity for employees and customers, as stated on its official site. The agency focuses on fairly administering state tax laws and efficiently collecting revenues while providing accurate information according to its official website. It is also known for promoting diversity and equity within its operations according to its official site, overseeing collection of state taxes and delivering reliable financial information according to its official website, and operating within state taxation and revenue management frameworks as detailed online on its official website.
