Illinois families continue to feel financial pressure as Tax Day arrives, according to an April 15 statement from House Republicans. The statement says that while working families are struggling with expenses, Governor J.B. Pritzker and House Democrats have introduced additional tax increases during the current legislative session.
The announcement highlights concerns about the state budget, which is reported to spend $1 billion more than last year. House Republicans say that Democrats have filed several new taxes on both families and businesses in order to fund this increased spending.
The statement also points out that Illinois homeowners pay what it describes as the highest property taxes in the country. It cites WalletHub’s ranking of Illinois as having the highest overall tax rates nationwide. In addition, Governor Pritzker is said to have enacted 49 tax and fee increases since taking office, including a budget last year with $700 million in new taxes.
In response to these developments, House Republican Leader Tony McCombie has introduced HB 5017, a bill aimed at lowering the income tax rate for Illinois residents. The goal of this legislation is to help families retain more of their earnings at a time when many are seeking relief from rising costs.
McCombie was elected in 2023 as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 89th House District, succeeding Andrew Chesney according to Ballotpedia.
As lawmakers debate these proposals, discussions about affordability and taxation remain central issues for many residents across Illinois.
