Illinois families are experiencing financial pressure from rising costs, according to an April 27 opinion piece by Illinois State Representative Regan Deering. Deering said the cost of living is increasing for residents across the state, with higher prices at grocery stores, on utility bills, property taxes, and gas.
The issue is significant because many working families are struggling to keep up with these expenses while waiting for relief from policymakers. Deering said Illinois’ gas tax has reached 48.3 cents per gallon since last July and noted that Illinois is one of only three states to apply sales taxes on top of gas prices. “At a time when families are already struggling, double-taxing drivers only makes matters worse,” Deering said.
Deering argued that these policies have a particularly strong impact on downstate communities where public transportation options are limited and driving is essential for daily life. She also pointed out that higher fuel costs contribute to increased prices for food and other necessities: “When energy costs rise, families feel it in nearly every part of their lives.” Meanwhile, she noted that Governor Pritzker proposed increasing the state budget by nearly $1 billion earlier this year.
House Republicans have introduced several measures aimed at easing the burden on taxpayers. These include eliminating the state tax on tips, creating a gas sales tax holiday, and providing targeted relief for home utility bills. “These are practical steps that would help families keep more of their hard-earned money,” Deering said.
Deering was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 88th House District in 2025 after succeeding Dan Caulkins according to Ballotpedia.
As lawmakers continue discussions over spending and taxation in Springfield, Deering called for action rather than excuses: “Illinoisans are not asking for excuses. They are asking for relief.” The ongoing debate highlights choices facing both legislators and constituents about how best to address growing financial challenges.
