The Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day (IGOLD) Rally took place at the Capitol in Springfield on April 16, drawing hundreds of participants. Attendees gathered to show support for the Second Amendment and to express concerns about recent legislative actions affecting gun owners.
The event was organized as a response to what many participants described as ongoing challenges faced by legal gun owners in Illinois. The rally focused on several pieces of legislation that have been introduced or passed by Democratic lawmakers, which attendees argued do not address criminal activity but instead target law-abiding citizens.
Among the laws discussed was the Protect Illinois Communities Act (HB5471), which bans the sale, manufacture, and distribution of certain firearms and high-capacity magazines. Critics at the rally said this measure restricts firearms commonly used for personal protection and called for more emphasis on enforcing existing laws rather than introducing new restrictions.
Other legislation mentioned included HB3320, known as the RIFL Act, which would require gun manufacturers to pay licensing fees to fund a victim compensation fund. Rally participants said this could increase costs for lawful gun owners. Another bill cited was HB4414, an ammunition tax proposal that opponents argued would impose additional burdens on both individuals and small retailers while creating privacy concerns through new registration mandates.
Kevin Schmidt is currently serving as a Republican member of the Illinois State House representing the 114th District after being elected in 2023. He succeeded LaToya Greenwood according to Ballotpedia.
As debates over firearm regulations continue in Illinois, supporters and opponents are expected to remain active in voicing their positions during future legislative sessions.
