Illinois State Representative Amy Grant announced on Apr. 30 that a proposed gerrymandering amendment from the Illinois House will not proceed in the Senate. Grant said, “This amendment would have tightened their grip on power and opened the door to even more partisan map-rigging in Illinois. I remain committed to fighting for fair maps.”

The issue has drawn attention as lawmakers debate changes to how legislative districts are drawn in the state. According to Grant, all eyes were on the Illinois Senate this week as Speaker Chris Welch’s amendment moved through the legislative process.

Grant encouraged residents to sign a petition opposing what she described as Springfield’s latest power grab, directing them to an online form for public input.

Grant was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 47th House District in 2023, succeeding Deanne Mazzochi according to information about her election.

Observers continue to watch developments related to redistricting proposals and efforts by legislators like Grant who say they are advocating for fairer electoral maps.
