The Illinois House GOP has expressed concerns over the recently signed Chicago transit bailout, arguing that it fails to address public transportation crime. Instead of increasing police presence, the legislation funds “transit ambassadors.”
“The newly signed Chicago Transit Bailout fails to address crime on trains and buses,” Illinois House GOP said in a post on X. “Rather than strengthening police presence on public transportation, Democrats chose to spend money on ‘transit ambassadors’ instead, leaving riders at risk.”
According to CTA data, reported crimes on buses and trains in Chicago increased by nearly 60% between 2019 and 2024, with theft and aggravated battery being the most common offenses. Despite deploying unarmed security personnel and social outreach teams, rider surveys indicate persistent fears about safety during evening commutes. Police staffing levels across the transit system have remained largely unchanged during this period.
The CTA’s 2025 operating budget includes approximately $3 billion in total spending, with over $60 million allocated for customer assistance and ambassador programs but only a small portion dedicated to transit policing. Ridership remains about 30% below pre-pandemic levels, indicating ongoing public reluctance to return to public transit.
The Illinois House GOP represents Republican members of the Illinois House of Representatives. Based in Springfield, it advocates for policies emphasizing fiscal restraint, public safety, and accountability in government spending. The caucus frequently challenges Democratic leadership on issues such as tax policy, crime prevention, and infrastructure development while promoting legislation aimed at protecting working families and small businesses throughout Illinois.
