The Illinois House Republicans said on May 13 that local governments are voicing opposition to Gov. JB Pritzker’s proposed statewide zoning policies, which they said would shift control from municipalities to the state.
The statement highlighted perspectives from local officials responding to the governor’s BUILD initiative, which proposes statewide zoning and development standards affecting authority currently held by municipalities, according to the Illinois House Republicans’ X account.
Municipalities across Illinois continue advancing their own housing proposals while seeking to retain local control. The Illinois Municipal League advanced the REAL Housing Act, which includes property tax relief, streamlined permitting, adaptive reuse incentives, and voluntary tools for additional housing units without preempting zoning authority, according to the Illinois Municipal League.
Illinois home prices are up 49% since 2019, while available housing inventory continues to lag. Illinois Policy Institute reported that low inventory has increased competition for available homes and contributed to rising prices across the state, according to the Illinois Policy Institute.
The Illinois House Republicans are part of the Illinois House Republican Caucus in the Illinois General Assembly, according to the Illinois House Republicans.
